Out of the Box Valentine's Day Date Ideas

I feel like Valentine's Day has begun to get a little cliche over the years. Flowers, chocolates, fancy dinners, and jewelry are all great and all, but what about mixing it up a bit and doing something different this year?

Often times we leave it up to the guys to plan some extravagant evening, but why not make this year a collaboration and do something that you'll both enjoy, and maybe something that won't break the bank.

To get your wheels turning, I've gathered up some creative ideas to help inspire you all to take the shake things up and make this Valentine's Day a real treat! I'm including links to local places for all of you Austinites, so no excuses!

How about going to a drive-in movie theater like the Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In Theater here in Austin? It's a movie night with a twist, and you can totally make out without grossing out the people next to you!

What is sexier and more fun than a good laugh?  Check out a comedy showwith your honey, like Kevin Nealon at Cap City Comedy Club!

Forget reservations, long waits, and crowded restaurants and order take out from your favorite restaurant and put together a simple and sweet table setting like this one I did last year. You could make it al fresco and set up a picnic or table for two outside.

You could even take the dining in a step further by whipping up a fabulous meal at home like these Braised Short Ribs from the Cooking Channel's list of Valentine's Day Dinner Recipes & Ideas.

Have a little staycation and book a room at a cool local hotel, like the Hotel San Jose. You can stay in and order room service and champagne or you could pretend you're strangers meeting at the bar and have a steamy rendezvous!

Wind down with a couples massage, like one of these relaxing Valentine's Day Special packages from milk + honey. For an inexpensive alternative, you can turn your home into a spa with candles, soft music, and massage oils, and take turns rubbing each other down.  Make sure to grab some champagne and strawberries to really bring the romance.

Pack up your camping gear and spend the night making s'mores and snuggling under the stars at a local campground, like Krause Springs. Can't get away? Set up camp in your own back yard!

Spice things up and go to a burlesque show, like the 6th Annual Anti-Valentine's Day Burlesque Show here in Austin.

Take a cue from Breakfast at Tiffany's, and spend the day taking turns doing things you've never done before.

I hope you found something that works for you and your love, or you and a friend. Here's wishing you and yours a happy Valentine's Day!
